The term “Mizoram” itself refers to “Land of the Mizos”, a reference to the dominant ethnic group of this state. Climate: The climate is ranging between the tropical and subtropical type. The rains are very heavy, primarily in monsoons.

3. Culture and Heritage

Ethnic Groups: The ethnic tribes were mainly Mizo tribes, Lushai, Hmar, Lai, Mara and Chakma.
Languages: Official language, Mizo and English.

Traditional Dance and Music:

Cheraw Dance: Known as the bamboo dance; it was danced during festivals.
Khuallam Dance: One of the traditional dances for guest welcoming.

Festivals:

Chapchar Kut: The spring festival after the jungle has been cleared for cultivation.
Mim Kut: Attitude after harvesting maize.
Pawl Kut: The thanksgiving festival, the harvest.

Food:

Bai, vegetable stew; Sawhchiar, rice and meat dish; Bamboo Shoot Curry are some of the most sought dishes.
Known for light, healthy meals with minimal oil and spices.

Agriculture: It is the main occupation of the people of Mizoram; their crops include rice, maize, and ginger
Shifting Cultivation: Also known as Jhum farming, although efforts are now being made to adopt a more durable farming practice.
Industries: Handloom, handicrafts, and bamboo products
Tourism: A sector growing quickly in Aizawl, Reiek Hill, and Phawngpui (Blue Mountain)
Natural Resources: Littered with bamboo, teak, and medicinal plants.

 

5. Natural Wonders

Phawngpui National Park: It is also named the Blue Mountain, which is the highest peak in Mizoram
Dampa Tiger Reserve: Dampa Tiger Reserve is a wildlife sanctuary, situated in the Mamit district.
Palak Lake: This is a natural lake and big and is surrounded by dense forests.
Vantawng Falls: Vantawng Falls is the tallest waterfall in Mizoram. Also, a tourist destination
Hmuifang and Reiek Hills: Hills for adventure activities and scenic view.

 

6. Historical Importance

Mizoram became the 23rd state of India on 20th February, 1987.
It was an integral part of Assam but then in 1972 became a Union Territory that later attained state status.
The movement of Mizo National Front had helped in the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986.

 

7. Flora and Fauna

Flora: The area is marked with dense bamboos, orchids, and rhododendrons.
Fauna: Many species come under this category, like the hoolock gibbon, serow, and clouded leopard.
