2. History

Karnataka has a very ancient history dating back to pre-historic times. The region was ruled throughout centuries by some powerful dynasties such as the Mauryas, Satavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Empire, and the Wodeyars of Mysore.

1. Maurya and Satavahana Influence:

  • This region, at first, was ruled by the Mauryan Empire, and then it was conquered by Satavahanas. This was the era that could mold the prehistoric culture and the trade network.

2. Chalukya and Hoysala Dynasties:

  • The Chalukyas (6th to 12th century) built a significant power, thus Karnataka’s rich heritage in architecture with their iconic temples, especially in Badami and Pattadakal.
  • Hoysalas (11th to 14th century) established the magnificent ones like the Chennakesava Temple in Belur and Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebidu .

3. Vijayanagara Empire:

4. Wodeyars of Mysore:

  • Kingdom of Mysore: The Wodeyars established the kingdom in the 17th century. It played a dominant role in the politics of south Indian until it was annexed by the British in 1799 when Tipu Sultan was defeated.

5. Post-Independence Era:

  • After India was freed from the shackles of British in 1947, Karnataka was formed in 1956 when the States Reorganization Act was enacted. It was till then known as the Mysore State, which was later renamed in 1973 as Karnataka.

3. Geography and Climate

Karnataka geographically varies:

Western Ghats: it has on its western side a range of hills, UNESCO World Heritage site, with dense forests and wildlife, and the hill resort of Coorg (Kodagu) and Chikmagalur.

Deccan Plateau: The main part of the interior of the state is taken up by the Deccan Plateau, famous for rich black soils and agricultural uses.

Coastal Karnataka: This region, having been surrounded by the Arabian Sea is highly bestowed with beaches like Gokarna and Karwar, in addition to having rich history in maritime trade.
